Obedience Classes

Star City Canine Training Club offers a program of classes that can  aid in the development of your canine friend from puppyhood through adulthood.   The program offers classes beginning at 12 weeks of age, to establish the foundation of good behavior along with socialization and common puppy problems, all the way through adulthood where your pup might achieve the Canine Good Citizen award from the American Kennel Club to Certified Pet Therapy  from Delta Society Pet Partners.   We also offer competition level classes for those who like to earn titles and awards for their dogs.

Applications for classes MUST BE RECEIVED the friday prior to the beginning of the first class.  Please allow 2 - 3 days for delivery of mailed applications.
  Puppy Class will remain open for registration until  the first night with dogs.  More information regarding class dates and times will be posted soon.  

Enrollment in classes is open to club members and the public on a first come first served basis.

In 2014 Star City Canine Training Club will offer 5 sessions of Obedience classes beginning in January, March, May, August and October.   The October session is our final session for 2014.  After this session, classes will begin again in January of 2015.

Some classes do NOT require dogs on the first night of class.  Please read the course description for more information.  Dates for the first class are indicated and continue consecutively, unless otherwise indicated. Classes are generally limited to 8-10 dogs, and classes are offered on a first come, first serve basis.  Any applications received after a class is full will be placed on a waiting list for the class.   Occasionally, obedience classes are offered during the daytime.  Please let us know if you are interested in pursuing a daytime option by e-mailing.  Classes currently scheduled to be offered in 2013 are listed in blue, with classes that are open for enrollment indicated with a "Click Here for Application" notation in the right hand column.

 ALL classes (generally composed of 7 one hour meetings) cost $95.00, unless otherwise noted.  We reserve the right to cancel a class if there is not sufficient interest.

SCCTC classes are taught using proactive and positive reinforcement training techniques that include the use of food, toys, and praise as rewards for correct behavior.  We look forward to helping you achieve your goals with your canine companion!

This class is designed for older puppies and dogs with no previous obedience training.  You will learn how to teach your dog using scientifically proven reward based training techniques that will lay the foundation for effective communication, understanding, and form a strong relationship with your canine companion.  Beginner I includes instruction for the following skills: attention, sit, down, wait, recall/come, stay, stand, leash walking, as well as good manners.

Class Description:
In this more advanced beginner class, dog/handlerteams will cement the learning and extend the skills from Beginner Level I.  Skills include: attention, sit/down stay, heel position, heeling/controlled walking, and preparation for Canine Good Citizen class.  Beginner II is generally the prerequisite for CGC, Rally, and agility classes.

CGC class prepares dog/handler teams for AKC’s Canine Good Citizen evaluation.  Basic obedience skills are practiced as well as such real life situations as walking through a crowd, separation from the owner, etc.

If you are interested in doing any type of therapy dog work in hospitals, nursing homes, or schools, then this class is a must.   Throughout the course, you will learn proper procedures, expectations, and receive the training necessary to be very successful in therapy work.  The class culminates with the opportunity to take the Delta Society Pet Partner evaluation.

The prerequisite is a CGC certificate or permission of the Obedience Chair.

This class is designed for the team that has completed the Rally Novice class and would like additional Novice course practice.  Rally Obedience provides an excellent introduction into competition obedience as well as other dog sports as it encourages teamwork and affords an opportunity to strengthen both skills and a good working relationship.  During this NOVICE Rally class, you use the skills previously learned to do pre set Rally Courses.  You will practice the rules, skills, and exercises necessary to be successful in Rally Novice and Rally Novice competition.

This class is for all Rally levels and will focus on encouraging effort and enthusiasm.  Dogs must have good heeling, attention, and know sit and down.  Teams should be working on stand and stay.  We will discuss exercises and answer questions but owners will be expected to read the "rules and regulations"  on their own.  Each week there will be several sequences of 3 or 4 exercises. Ring entry and pre-entry warm ups will be practiced.

Teams will beintroduced to the individual skills necessary for future competition in AKC Obedience and Rally using positive training methods.  The recall, fronts, both finishes, foot work, heel position and heeling,  pivots, obedience jumps, and stays in all positions will be introduced and practiced throughout this class..

Class Description:
K9 Nose Work is a dog training activity designed to develop a dog's natural scenting ability by using her/his curiosity, desire to hunt, and love of toys, food and exercise.  The art and practice of nose work is open to dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Prerequisities:
Dogs must be able to stay quiet in a crate in-between their turns.   No age limit or skill level is required.

Competition Novice Obedience introduces dog/handler teams to the basic skills necessary to be successful in the Novice Obedience ring.  Proper heel position is addressed, and dog/handler teams will learn techniques for better, more precise heeling, formal recall, stand for exam, figure eight, group stays, as well as the rules for competition obedience.   Ring-like distractions will be introduced gradually as the class progresses.

Class Description:
This class will use distractions and proofing in a 'show like' setting to prepare dogs for the pressure of competition.  The class concentrates on preparation for the show ring: set up,  warm up plan before entering the ring,  showing without food or toys in the ring, and problem solving.  It also covers the rules and regulations pertaining to Obedience.     Group stays, Ring pressure, judge and outside ring distractions will be a part of this class.
Prerequisities:
Students enrolling in this class should be close to showing in Novice, Open or Utility or the Optional Titling Classes now available from AKC.  Or, the dog enrolled must have a CD and be working towards advanced obedience and titles.

This class will concentrate on various flight paths and design and stationary segments in freestyle choreography.  Emplasis will be given to flow through effective transitions.  Various moves and transitions will be taught using various flight paths and with selected music.

Prerequisities:
Dogs should have appropriate attention to their handlers.  The dogs should have fluid heel work on right and left sides and front work, stationary and mobile.  Teams should have or be training a few moves such as weaves, circles, and pivots.  The dogs should be able to work off lead and under handler's control at all times.
Notes:
Please note, this is a 6 week class.

Class Description:

 This class will concentrate on various flight paths (locomotor phrases) and stationary segments (axial phrases) in freestyle choreography using the sequencing/chaining of advanced moves. 

Prerequisities:
Teams in any of the Freestyle Classes in the current year may enroll in this class under the following guidellines;

Dogs should have good attention to their handlers at about 90% or more of the time during heeling work.  The dogs should have fluid heel work on right and left sides and front work, stationary and mobile.  Canine teams should be proficient in at least 3 freestyle moves, i.e., weaves, circles, gyros, pivots. The dogs need to have already performed a full routine event, individual or group not including the Segmenting routine.   The dogs should be able to work off lead.  Excessive barking that causes distraction to progression of their team's performance or to others will be excused from class. 

Notes:
This class will begin on Monday May 6 and continue on Mondays.  Dates are May 6,20 and June 3,17 and 24.  Two classes will run 1.5 hours
