The DEADLINE for registration for classes beginning in January is Monday, December 29, 2008.  Some classes do NOT require dogs on the first night of class.  Please read the course description for more information.  Dates for the first class are indicated and continue consecutively, unless otherwise indicated. Classes are generally limited to 8-10 dogs, and classes are offered on a first come, first serve basis.  Any applications received after a class is full will be placed on a waiting list for the class.  Occasionally, obedience classes are offered during the daytime.  Please let us know if you are interested in pursuing a daytime option by e-mailing starcityk9obedience@yahoo.com.   Classes listed in blue will be offered during the January/February 2009 obedience session.  ALL classes cost $85.00, unless otherwise noted.

 

SCCTC classes are taught using proactive and positive reinforcement training techniques that include the use of food, toys, and praise as rewards for correct behavior. The use of a clicker as a reward marker is often encouraged in many of our classes.  We look forward to helping you achieve your goals with your canine companion!

Puppy Socialization Class  (7 weeks)

Congratulations on your new puppy.  What an exciting time for you and your family!  Our puppy class, for puppies 8-18 weeks of age, is planned to guide you through the critical stages of your puppy’s development with emphasis on socialization and prevention of problems.  To aid you in this we will be using the Puppy Toolkit so you will have an easy reference to follow at home.  This kit will give you information, exercises and games you can use to raise your puppy to become a wonderful companion.  The additional cost of the kit is $13.00 (including sales tax) due at the first class.  No puppies the first night the class meets, please.

Puppy Performance Obedience Fundamentals II (6 weeks)

Give your performance puppy a head start!  In this class, you will learn a playful and motivating approach for building an enthusiastic desire in your puppy for successful obedience competition.  The class will focus on handler interaction using hands on play, petting, praise, games, as well as the proper use of food for building motivation and performance fundamentals for all competition obedience levels through utility.  Puppies from 12 weeks to 7 months welcome. Class limit:  6 competition prospect puppy dog/handler teams.  Puppies who participated in PPOF during the October session will be given class preference.

Beginner Level I Obedience (7 weeks)

This class is designed for older puppies and dogs with no previous obedience training.  You will learn how to teach your dog using scientifically proven reward based training techniques that will lay the foundation for effective communication, understanding, and form a strong relationship with your canine companion.  Beginner I includes instruction for the following skills: attention, sit, down, wait, recall/come, stay, stand, leash walking, as well as good manners.  No dogs the first week the class meets, please.

Class Dates:  January 4, 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8 and 22. The class will not meet on February 15, 2009.

Beginner Level II Obedience  (7 weeks)

In this more advanced beginner class, dog/handler teams will cement the learning and extend the skills from Beginner Level I.  Skills include: attention, sit/down stay, heel position, heeling/controlled walking, and preparation for Canine Good Citizen class.  The prerequisite for Beginner Level II is Beginner Level I or another previous obedience class.  Beginner II is generally the prerequisite for CGC, Rally, and agility classes.

Wheel ‘N Heel Obedience (6 weeks)

This class is for dog/handler teams using wheelchairs. Class available upon request (last class held during January/February 2008 session.

 

Fun and Fitness for Your Dog (7 weeks)

This class will provide your dog with a great opportunity to practice obedience skills and learn new tricks and games that will enhance the life of your dog.  Topics will include fitness exercises and basic canine massage.  All participating dogs should be active, healthy, and non-aggressive.  Successful completion of Beginner II/CGC serves as the class prerequisite.  No dogs on the first night the class meets, please.

  

Canine Good Citizen Class/Evaluation (7 weeks)

CGC class prepares dog/handler teams for AKC’s Canine Good Citizen evaluation.  Basic obedience skills are practiced as well as such real life situations as walking through a crowd, separation from the owner, etc.  Beginner II level skills are strongly encouraged and serve as the prerequisite for this course.

Therapy Dog Class (7 weeks)

If you are interested in doing any type of therapy dog work in hospitals, nursing homes, or schools, then this class is a must.  Throughout the course, you will learn proper procedures, expectations, and receive the training necessary to be very successful in therapy work.  The course manual costs an additional $30.00.  The class culminates with the opportunity to take the Delta Society Pet Partner evaluation.  The general prerequisite is a CGC certificate or similar skills.  No dogs on the first night of class, please.

Competition AKC Rally Novice & Rally Advanced/Excellent Obedience

Rally Obedience provides an excellent introduction into competition obedience as well as other dog sports as it encourages teamwork and affords an opportunity to strengthen both skills and a good working relationship.  During our Rally classes, you will learn the rules, skills, and exercises necessary to be successful in the Rally ring.  Successful completion of Beginner Level II and/or CGC is the prerequisite for Rally Novice, and the RN title/class is the general prerequisite for Rally Advanced/Excellent.

 

·         Rally Advanced/Excellent begins Sunday, January 4, at 4:00 p.m.  (K. Elliott)

Prerequisite:  Rally Novice skills.  Class Dates:  January 4, 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8 and 22.  This class will not meet on February 15, 2009.

 

·         Rally Novice will likely be held in March 2009.

 

Competition Novice Obedience (6 weeks)

Competition Novice introduces dog/handler teams to the basic skills necessary to be successful in the Novice Obedience ring.  Proper heel position is addressed, and dog/handler teams will learn techniques for better, more precise heeling, formal recall, stand for exam, figure eight, group stays, as well as the rules for competition obedience.  Ring-like distractions will be introduced gradually as the class progresses.  The prerequisite for our Novice Obedience classes includes CGC and/or Beginner II or permission of the instructor and/or obedience chairperson.

 

·         Wednesday, January 7, at 7:45 p.m.  Competition Novice Ring Ready (Prerequisite: Competition Novice Obedience Skills/Class)

(B. Watson) This class level is intended for dog/handler teams almost ready to enter a trial.

 

Competition Open Obedience (6 weeks)

Open Obedience class prepares dog/handler teams to compete in the Open class in AKC obedience competition.  The class will include training for the following skills and exercises: off leash heeling and figure eights, drop on recall, dumbbell retrieve, jumping over high and broad jumps, and include discussion of rules and regulations.  In order to apply for this class, you should have a CD on your dog and/or Novice Obedience skills.  Preference will be given to CD titled dogs.  Dogs must be reliable off leash.   Previous Open Obedience classes serve as the prerequisite for this class.

Competition Utility Obedience (6 weeks)

Utility Obedience class introduces the complex behaviors that make up the exercises in this advanced level of obedience.  An introduction will be provided for signal exercises, directed retrieve, directed jumping, scent discrimination, and moving stand depending on the needs of the class members.  Preference will be given to CDX titled dogs.  Students will need to purchase/possess properly sized competition utility articles and white utility gloves prior to the class starting (see www.jjdog.com for mentioned items).  Class limit: 8 dog/handler teams.

 

·        Utility II (Prerequisite: Intro to Utility) Wednesday, January 7, at 6:30 p.m.  (M. Tinaglia)  Limit: 8

 

 Conformation Handling Class

Our handling class, designed with owner-handlers in mind, provides basic information for competing in AKC/UKC conformation shows as well as ring procedures and practice time in the ring.

·        The next Conformation Handling class will be held in 2009.

  

Competition Distractions Class

The Competition Distractions class was formed to help obedience competitors gradually increase the level of distractions to better prepare for competition.  Due to the nature of this class, it is usually held in Roanoke area public park locations to be determined by the individual instructors.  In January, the class was held on Sunday afternoons, but as daylight lengthens, it will be most likely held on weekday evenings.  If you are interested in a class of this type, please feel free to e-mail or to call us to express your interest so that we may notify you once the dates/locations are set.
